The inhabitants of Mesopotamia were polytheistic . Each city had its patron deity, including:
Sin: The moon was considered the patron god of Ur
Shamash: The sun was the chief god of Lagash.
Enlil: The air was protector of the city of Nippur.
As the territory was conquered by other peoples were adding new gods and beliefs.
